SkillsUSA participates in White House “CTE Innovators” Event
On 30 June 2015, three SkillsUSA student members, three SkillsUSA instructors, and two members of the SkillsUSA national staff were among those honored in Washington, D.C. to participate in a White House convening: “Celebrating Innovations in Career and Technical Education” (CTE). First Lady Michelle Obama delivered remarks praising the good work of educators, educational institutions, and - especially - students striving to develop cutting-edge skills that align with the jobs that companies actually need to fill. The White House conference included a showcase of student projects, and discussions with educators, philanthropists, business leaders, and policy makers on ways to expand CTE programs.

Go Global – Join in the celebration of World Youth Skills Day
Around the world and around the clock on 15 July 2015, the celebration of World Youth Skills Day is picking up momentum and generating excitement. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the Skill India campaign on the occasion of World Youth Skills Day on 15 July at a special event in New Delhi. The set of initiatives is aimed at developing skills and promoting entrepreneurship among Indian young people. The United Nations (UN) is organizing several events at UN Headquarters in Bonn (Germany), New York (USA), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), and elsewhere. The United Nations in Bonn will observe the first World Youth Skills Day together with the German UN Youth Delegate, WorldSkills Champions, as well as guests from Bonn University and UN Bonn staff, with a panel discussion on “Youth skills for work and life in the post-2015 agenda”.

WorldSkills joins European thought leaders placing importance on Vocational Education and Training (VET)
At a meeting hosted by the European Union (EU) Latvian Presidency in Riga, Latvia, on 22 June 2015, Ministers from the European Union Member States, candidate countries, Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein renewed their efforts to raise the overall quality and status of VET. They also reaffirmed their support for the wider European growth and jobs agenda. They also endorsed the new medium-term deliverables for VET, known as the Riga conclusions.

Finland Competitors Train Up for WorldSkills São Paulo 2015
In the Finnish national competition Taitaja2015, there were 50 international guest Competitors from the Nordic countries, Estonia, Belarus, Russia, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Austria, and Liechtenstein, and even from as far away as Brazil, Morocco, and China participating in 30 different skills. Taitaja2015 was held in May in Turku, Finland.

America’s highly skilled workforce met in Louisville
SkillsUSA gathered in Louisville, Kentucky, 22-26 June 2015 for its 51st annual National Leadership and Skills Conference, a showcase of the talent of career and technical education students. Quality career and technical education was the centerpiece of the conference. More than 15,000 students, teachers, education leaders, and representatives from more than 600 national corporations, trade associations, businesses, and labor unions participated in the event - with its highlight of 100 hands-on skill and leadership competitions.

Update from the Sanitation Studio Project in Nepal
The Sanitation Studio in Nepal is one of three similar projects facilitated by the WorldSkills Foundation (WSF) in collaboration with Healthabitat (HH) of Australia. The Bhattendanda area of Nepal, where the ongoing Sanitation Studio programme supported by WSF is hosted, was seriously affected by the two recent Nepal earthquakes. Healthabitat Director Paul Pholeros has returned there to support local teams, and has advised that the teams noted some of the most severe destruction seen in their entire trip, which had already included some of the hardest-hit areas of the country.

Introducing the Champions for WorldSkills Digital Challenge
The first-ever WorldSkills Digital Challenge is a ground breaking hackathon-style event that brings top IT developers and designers together with WorldSkills Champions to create solutions to local social problems in innovative and sustainable ways. To participate in the Challenge, interested parties needed to apply, and the response was incredible - a record number of 111 applications, including 26 WorldSkills Champions.
