What's ON #2: Moving TVET to the top of the global agenda

Today, Lyon becomes the global hub of skills excellence as WorldSkills Competition 2024 and WorldSkills Conference 2024 begin, spotlighting the crucial role of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in our rapidly evolving world.

Excitement from last night’s Opening Ceremony tips over into day one of WorldSkills Lyon 2024. Eurexpo begins to fill up with visitors, delegates arrive at WorldSkills Conference 2024, and our young Competitors get started on their Test Projects for the next four days of intense competition. The stage is set for an inspirational event.

What’s been happening so far…

Last night, the LDLC Arena came alive with 12,000 attendees and thousands more watching online as President Macron officially opened WorldSkills Lyon 2024. The Parade of Nations saw 1,400 young skilled people enter the arena with their team, ready to enjoy their moment on the global stage. Did you miss it? Watch the Opening Ceremony wrap-up video.

WorldSkills Competition 2024 has begun!

WorldSkills Lyon 2024 is officially underway, transforming Eurexpo into a vibrant showcase of skilled talent. The Competition spans seven sector villages covering 140,000m² – the same as 26 football pitches. Come and visit our 62 workshops and watch Champions demonstrate skills that are shaping industries worldwide. Each one of the 59 Official Skills and 3 Exhibition Skills show the pivotal role of TVET in addressing global challenges and driving innovation. Once you have seen the Competitors in action, you can test your own skills in our Try-a-Skill booths in more than 50 trades.

The WorldSkills Lyon 2024 website is full of practical advice for planning your day.

 

WorldSkills Conference 2024 starts

This morning, WorldSkills Conference 2024 opens under the banner “Moving TVET to the top of the global agenda.” This two-day event brings together governments, policymakers, industry leaders, education providers, and young professionals to explore how TVET systems need to evolve to equip young people with the right skills to meet a fast-changing, uncertain future.

Highlights include:

  • 09:00 – 11: 00: Opening Plenary: “Strategies for excellence: Towards a global TVET agenda”
  • 11:30 – 12:45: “Breaking stereotypes: Building gender equity in skills”
  • 11:30 – 13:00: “Keeping climate promises: How TVET can lead the green transition”
  • 16:00 – 17:30: “Displacement, climate change, and conflict: skills initiatives for fragile economies”

Broadcasting begins

We are broadcasting every day of the Competition from 11 to 14 September. Tune in to watch more than 20 hours of live event coverage throughout the Competition.

Samsung booth opens

At 12:00 CEST today, Samsung’s senior leaders will join members of WorldSkills Board, WorldSkills International and WorldSkills Champions Trust to the official opening of their impressive, interactive stand. The celebration will mark Samsung’s 15th year as a WorldSkills Global Partner, and the sixth time Samsung has been Overall Event Presenter.

Lyon comes alive with skills

WorldSkills Lyon 2024 extends beyond Eurexpo, transforming the city into a skills celebration hub. The Sports & Skills exhibition at the Rhône Prefecture runs until 16 September, while the Village des Métiers at Place Bellecour showcases eight skills families from 11 to 14 September. On 13 to 14 September, local companies plan to open their doors for public tours, making this a truly city-wide talent showcase. Follow all the activities in the city.
