Team Kyrgyzstan reflect on historic journey at WorldSkills Lyon 2024

Team Kyrgyzstan’s first WorldSkills Competition was a significant step for their country on the global stage of skills excellence.

In September 2024, three talented individuals from Kyrgyzstan — Eldar Bakirov, Aiana Abditalipova, and Nargiza Zholdoshbai Kyzy — arrived in Lyon to show the world their skills and make history for their country. It was more than a milestone. It was a journey of growth, inspiration, and discovery.

Aiana, who competed in Cooking, described the Competition as a masterclass in overcoming obstacles. Facing unfamiliar equipment, she adapted and thrived, a testament to her determination and resilience.

She remembers, “Everything was at the highest level. Since so many countries took part in this Competition, I was able to meet many participants and learn a lot from them. The main challenge was to work on equipment that was new for me, but I could do it!”

Nargiza competed in Fashion Technology. Among the many lessons that she learned was the importance of managing time and attention to detail. These skills, she feels, will guide her as she navigates her future in fashion.

She shares, “WorldSkills Lyon 2024 was a great opportunity to test my skills. One of the most memorable moments was seeing talented participants from all over the world working towards one goal. The most important thing for me was that I realized all this was the result of my hard work and perseverance.”

Eldar Bakirov, who competed in Welding, also reflects on the Competition’s rigor and camaraderie. He says, “I am glad I was able to participate in WorldSkills Lyon 2024. The Competitors were talented, and the experience taught me about things that I need to work on to improve.”

When they arrived home after the WorldSkills Competition, the young Champions were met with red carpets and celebrations. Their participation was widely covered by national media and inspired many young people across the country. It has all contributed to creating excitement among their peers.

Bakyt Alymbaev, an Expert for WorldSkills Kyrgyzstan, has seen increased interest in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), particularly in Welding.

As WorldSkills Kyrgyzstan looks forward to WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, the team is already preparing to build on their experience. Kuvan Zhusuev, a founder of the WorldSkills Kyrgyzstan public foundation, says, “Having seen the high standard and level of preparation of other teams in Lyon, we will intensify our preparations. We are planning to extend the number of skills and focus on innovative categories.”

Participation in WorldSkills Lyon 2024 was a new chapter for WorldSkills Kyrgyzstan in global skills development. The commitment and passion of Eldar, Aiana, and Nargiza have not only elevated their own potential but have inspired Kyrgyz youth to dream big, pursue excellence, and help grow their country through the power of skills.
