People’s Choice Awards engage visitors, excite Competitors
By WorldSkills Calgary 2009 Ltd.
While 900 international Experts will be judging 45 skill categories based on years of experience, there’s an opportunity for the average person to make an impact as well.
Visitors to WorldSkills Calgary 2009 can vote for their favourite project in eight skill categories in the People’s Choice Awards.
“The People’s Choice Awards will really engage visitors,” said Amy Lewis, Marketing Coordinator. “We will hand out ballots as people arrive so they can tick off their favourite projects and then drop their ballot into a box at the Rotary Information Booths.”
Voting will take place on Friday, September 4 and Saturday September 5 in the skill categories of Sheet Metal Technology, Confectioner/Pastry Cook, Landscape Gardening, Graphic Design, Web Design, Floristry, Hairdressing and Fashion Technology.
Since this Competition marks the first-ever People’s Choice Awards at a WorldSkills Competition, Team Canada Competitor Daisy Liang considers herself fortunate.
“I would be really thrilled if I won,” said Liang, who is competing in Fashion Technology. “It would mean that my designs aren’t just technically sound but are also appreciated by the people who would actually wear them. The experience of competing in WorldSkills Calgary 2009 has definitely given me a head start on my career.”
Prizes for the winners of the People’s Choice Awards will be handed out at the Competitors’ Farewell Party after the Closing Ceremony on September 6.
