Dominican Republic selects young talent for WorldSkills Lyon 2024

The Caribbean country will send four Competitors to the 47th WorldSkills Competition in the skills of Cybersecurity, Bakery, and Patisserie and Confectionery.

The National Institute of Technical and Vocational Training, or INFOTEP in Spanish, announced the Team Dominican Republic for WorldSkills Lyon 2024 during a medal ceremony for the winners of WorldSkills Dominican Republic 2023 and WorldSkills Chile 2023. Four Competitors have been selected for the international championship.

During a speech at the event, INFOTEP’s Director General and the Dominican Republic’s Official Delegate for WorldSkills, Mr Rafael Santos Badía, described WorldSkills as a platform “to observe the development of technical training worldwide, as well as a meeting of the leaders who shape the training policies in their respective nations.”

He added that national and international competitions have helped the country to forge a reputation for training talented and creative young people, capable of contributing to a more sustainable and better world.

Eleven skills were represented at WorldSkills Dominican Republic 2023, where 29 Competitors and 25 Experts from across the country demonstrated their abilities. The winners in each skill had the chance to compete at WorldSkills Chile in October last year alongside more than 550 other young people from Chile, Uruguay, and Ecuador.

The four Competitors were selected to represent the Dominican Republic at the 47th WorldSkills Competition thanks to their remarkable performances in Chile.

  • Euris Astacio Medina and Frailyn López, from INFOTEP’s Metropolitan Regional Directorate, won a silver medal in Cybersecurity.
  • Yasmel Valdez Ramírez won the silver medal in Bakery, representing the Eastern Regional Directorate and the School of Hotel Management, Gastronomy and Pastry.
  • Jhaydeé Amaya Valdez Pérez, from the Cibao Norte Regional Directorate, won bronze in Patisserie and Confectionery.

The Dominican Republic, through INFOTEP, has been a member of WorldSkills Americas since 2010, and of WorldSkills International since 2012, with representation at WorldSkills Leipzig 2013 and WorldSkills São Paulo 2015.

WorldSkills Lyon 2024 will show the world that Where there is a skill, There is a way. A major industrial centre and a global reference for gastronomy and cuisine, the city of Lyon will host the 47th WorldSkills Competition from 10 to 15 September 2024. Over 1,500 Competitors from over 65 countries and regions will compete in 62 skill competitions. Organizing the Competition in France aligns with the country’s strategy to promote vocational education and training and transform it to adapt to current and future employment needs.
