WorldSkills Experts Faculty webinar series explores sustainability

View the recordings of the first two sustainability webinars, along with the full WorldSkills Experts Faculty webinar series, on the WorldSkills YouTube channel.

As sustainability becomes a central theme across industries, the WorldSkills Experts Faculty has taken a closer look at how green practices are shaping both competition and training. Through its webinar series, Experts from around the world have shared perspectives from their sectors, offering a clearer picture of what sustainability means in practice, and what it demands from the future workforce.

The WorldSkills Experts Faculty webinar series was launched in December 2023 as a resource for fellow WorldSkills Experts to expand their knowledge and continue learning. They are held quarterly, with topics selected according to the interest and requests from the Experts Faculty members.

The first of the three webinars dedicated to the topic of sustainability brought together voices from the skills of Fashion Technology and Car Painting. The webinar was held on 23 July 2025, and titled “Sustainability in practice.” Moderated by Craig Brazil, Skill Competition Manager for Industrial Mechanics, the conversation addressed topics such as industry realities and Competitor development.

Across the session, speakers reflected on how their sectors define sustainability day to day, whether in training workshops, workplaces, or competition settings. They discussed why vocational fields rooted in manufacturing and design must rethink practices, and where sustainable techniques could be shared across skill areas.

Afsana Ferdousi Wormey described the transformation she has seen in the fashion industry in Bangladesh to increase sustainability standards, adopting more responsible approaches to materials and production. She reflected on how WorldSkills Competitions prioritize sustainable production, and shared ideas on how to embed sustainability in training.

Samuel Guinard offered a view from Car Painting, where sustainability increasingly shapes processes and coatings. He discussed how these practices are embedded into Technical Descriptions and competition assessment.

The panel also explored future trends, noting that advances in materials, tools, and techniques will continue to reshape sustainability in their industries. They also highlighted the need for collaboration among WorldSkills Members, educators, and industry leaders to ensure that green skills develop globally and consistently.

The second webinar in this topic, held on 5 November 2025, broadened the lens to Sustainability in TVET systems themselves. Moderated by Robin Gillet, WorldSkills Experts Faculty representative from France, the webinar looked into systemic approaches and examples to greening Technical and Vocational Education and Training.

Kenneth Abraham Barrientos, UNESCO-UNEVOC Team Leader for the SDGs Greening TVET, talked about the importance of equipping young people with the knowledge, skills, and values to enable them to act responsibly for future generations. She said this was key to motivating young people to acquire the technical skills to implement sustainability practices.

Hugo Nakatani, Specialist in Industrial Development in Brazil’s SENAI, and Mark Forsyth, Expert in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning from WorldSkills UK, shared examples of how sustainability is becoming part of everyday teaching and institutional planning. Much of the conversation centred on curriculum: how sustainability principles can be built into training programmes, the role of digital tools and hands-on projects, and why partnerships between educators and industry are essential.

A third and last webinar on the topic of sustainability is scheduled to take place on 11 March 2026, looking into Sustainability at WorldSkills Competitions. While registration is not yet open, all recordings of past WorldSkills Experts Faculty webinar series can be explored on the WorldSkills YouTube channel.
