Three new countries join WorldSkills Africa

Algeria, South Africa, and Tanzania welcomed as official Members of the regional organization.

WorldSkills Africa has welcomed three new Members: Algeria, South Africa, and Tanzania. They join the six founding Members announced earlier this year — Ethiopia, Malawi, Namibia, Rwanda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Launched on 17 February 2024 at the African Union Assembly in Addis Ababa, WorldSkills Africa is a pioneering initiative to advance Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) across the continent. It is hosted by the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD), which serves as its Secretariat.

One of WorldSkills Africa’s first major initiatives is a Capacity Building Programme to upskill trainers, raise standards, and strengthen national skills systems. The six-month programme, which concludes this month, is creating a flexible framework to improve skills training across Africa.

Meet the new Members of WorldSkills Africa:

Algeria

Algeria is the first country from North Africa to join WorldSkills Africa, represented by its Ministry of Vocational Education and Training. Established in 2003, the Ministry oversees a network of around 1,100 institutions dedicated to advancing vocational education and skills. Algeria has hosted national skills competitions in 2006, 2007, and 2012, and is preparing for another edition this year. By joining WorldSkills Africa, the country looks forward to accessing invaluable resources, engaging with a wider professional network, and exploring new opportunities for collaboration.

South Africa

As the oldest WorldSkills International Member from the African continent, WorldSkills South Africa now extends its role to the regional platform. Operating under the Department of Higher Education and Training, the organization plays a vital role in promoting TVET, artisan development, and addressing skills shortages in line with the country’s National Development Plan. South Africa has a strong record in skills competitions, topping the medal table at WorldSkills Africa Swakopmund 2022 and fielding 23 Competitors in 22 skills at WorldSkills Lyon 2024.

Tanzania

Tanzania will be represented by the National Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (NACTVET). NACTVET is responsible for registration, accreditation, and quality assurance of TVET institutions across the country, ensuring high standards and relevant training. Through WorldSkills Africa, Tanzania aims to broaden opportunities for collaboration, share best practices, and engage in benchmarking to further strengthen its TVET system.
