OECD launches new skills strategy to inform government policies for a better future

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has launched its new Skills Strategy, designed to “help countries build better skills policies and turn them into jobs, growth, and better lives”. The strategy is intended to inform systematic and comprehensive skills policies, to meet common challenges such as setting investment priorities with scarce resources, and to maintain a global perspective. The strategy outlines three policy issues which should form the basis of skills policies: firstly to develop relevant skills to meet current and emerging economic needs; secondly to “activate” the skills held by working-age unemployed by integrating under-represented groups into the labour market and removing demand-side barriers to hiring; and thirdly “putting skills to effective use”, ensuring that skills are used effectively in employment by enlarging demand of skills. Skills.oecd is a complimentary interactive site that offers the following:

• Descriptions of hot issues facing countries, companies and individuals today such as cultivating new skills, skill mismatch, brain drain, aging societies, youth unemployment, etc.
• Data visualisations that show how countries compare to others in developing, supplying and using skills, along with local case studies.
• Key findings and recommendations for countries, companies and individuals to maximise the use of their skills.
