A day without plumbing

wsf004_201302_hh_nepal_34.jpgThink about what your day would be like without plumbing. It’s not a pretty picture or one that is associated with a modern society. It would affect almost every part of your day. No fresh running water, no readily available hot water, no washing machine, no flushing toilet.

World Plumbing Day is an international event on 11 March initiated by the World Plumbing Council celebrating the important role plumbing plays in the health and safety of modern society. Many of us take safe drinking water and sanitation systems for granted until something goes wrong, then those that fix the situation are heroes in our eyes.

The WorldSkills Foundation works with WorldSkills Champions and Experts, Industry, and local educational Institutions to develop new sanitation systems in remote communities such as the Dhulikhel region of Nepal. This is one example that demonstrates how important having a skill in plumbing can be, and how working together in partnerships can make positive changes in many lives around the world.

Next time you are brushing your teeth, take the time to think about how lucky you are to have access to portable water at all times and how the work the plumbing industry works hard on a daily basis to ensure it stays that way. But more importantly, what can you do to help the regions of the world that are still struggling to get access to water for their homes and communities.
