The WorldSkills Americas 2014 Leaders Forum has begun, under the theme of Inspiring Excellence: Challenges of Professional Training in Latin America in the 21st century. Several high profile speakers opened the event. The first session turned to the global prespective taking an in depth look at the scope and role of skills competitions as a strategy to improve quality of professional training. David Hoey, CEO of WorldSkills International gave an enlightening presentation on the important role that skill competitions have on economic development and growth within the host country and around the world.

In September 2014, the world comes to Lucerne, Switzerland to attend the WorldSkills General Assembly. Delegates from the 68 WorldSkills Members come together for strategy, technical and overall organization discussions and decisions. One large part of this event is the WorldSkills Leaders Forum (WSLF) which is shaping up to be an impressive international view of skills, apprenticeships and the impact on the global economy and growth.

Abidjan is an important economic city of Côte d'Ivoire, located on the south-east coast of the country in the Gulf of Guinea. Fittingly, as a Sister City to São Paulo – host of the 42nd WorldSkills Competition in 2015 – it is also the place where Côte d'Ivoire's first national skills competition will take place from 15-17 May this year, an initiative supported by the WorldSkills Foundation (WSF) and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

Between 10 and 20 March 2014, the Plumbing and Heating Gold Medallists from the past two WorldSkills Competitions, Shane Trevitt (United Kingdom – WorldSkills London 2011) and Ciaran Coady (Ireland – WorldSkills Leipzig 2013) completed a visit to Diepsloot, South Africa in support of the Healthabitat Sanitation Studio in collaboration with local community partner WASSUP (Water, Amenities and Sanitation Service Upgrade Project).

Michael Christensen (Canada; Mechanical Engineering Design – CAD Champion from WorldSkills London 2011) and Simon Noerdjan (Suriname; Web Design Champion from WorldSkills Americas 2010) were the successful applicants to be selected for the second WorldSkills Foundation (WSF) - Institute of Technical Education (ITE) Virtual 3D Learning Innovation Lab, and have begun a three-month adventure in Singapore which will run to mid-June 2014.

An important part of his visit was to meet with several political, educational and industry leaders throughout the country to raise the awareness of what WorldSkills does and the benefits of hosting a WorldSkills Competition for a country.

An international seminar around "work based learning as a sustainable practice on vocational education and training" was held 9 April 2014 in the Finnish national competition in Lahti.
Among the speakers were Head of unit (VET) Dana Bachmann from the European Commission, President Simon Bartley from WorldSkills, and Executive Director Eija Alhojärvi from Skills Finland. Sung Ki Yi, Official Delegate from WorldSkills Korea also attended the seminar (photo).
