Of course the biggest event was the 42nd WorldSkills Competition held in Leipzig, Germany in July. WorldSkills Leipzig 2013 brought new perspective and value to the WorldSkills Competition. Media is continuing to see the potential and opportunity in the WorldSkills Competition, with nearly 1,000 media attending the event, creating articles, videos and interviews. With over 200,000 visitors to the event and over 800,000 direct reach on Facebook during the event, the WorldSkills message is reaching the masses. The WorldSkills Foundation has also been very active this year with Innovation Labs, creating new partnerships and working on community building projects like plumbing in rural Nepal and Bangladesh. For more information on the Foundation projects please visit their website: www.worldskillsfoundation.org. The large task that we undertook in 2013 was creating a new look and feel for the WorldSkills brand. I am happy to report that the new look and feel is now in the final stages of development and will be launched early 2014. |

The road to WorldSkills São Paulo 2015 has begun |
The 43rd WorldSkills Competition is set to take place in São Paulo, Brazil from 11-16 August 2015. This will be a momentous occasion, as it is the first time that the event has been held in Latin America. From 4-14 November 2013, WSI and the 2015 Competition Organizer had their first set of on-site meetings and venue tours to begin the planning of the comprehensive event. Members from WorldSkills Leipzig 2013 were also in Brazil. They put in a lot of hard work and held a fantastic event, but it was time for the official hand over and transfer of knowledge to WorldSkills São Paulo 2015. The occasion was bittersweet as their time as host came to an end, as it always is when the new host takes on the responsibilities of the next Competition. |

WorldSkills is at the tipping point |
WorldSkills is on the edge of a new horizon, one that takes WorldSkills well beyond the Competition. While the WorldSkills Competition will always be our flagship event, our focus is shifting towards becoming the international portal for skills excellence. This means reaching new audiences with targeted messaging about the skills agenda. We will be working with MSL, a Public Relations firm, on how to strengthen our communications. In order to take on this challenge, we must first build a greater awareness of our brand and our mission. To do that, we will elevate our role models, bring information to the people, and connect groups around the world to advance skills excellence. |

WorldSkills adds Bricklaying and Plumbing to Bangladesh Sanitation project mix |
Bricklaying Chief Expert Troy Everett (Australia) and Plumbing & Heating Champion Daniel Rattigan (Ireland) were recently sponsored by WorldSkills Foundation to join the latest Healthabitat Sanitation Studio project in the Dinajpur region of northern Bangladesh. This was the second Healthabitat initiative the Foundation has supported, following our first collaboration in Nepal earlier this year. Despite the challenges of working during the region’s rainy season, outcomes of the 10-day visit included two new septic tank prototypes, wastewater pipes, hand pumps and two new toilet facilities fitted with meters allowing SAFE staff and local families to monitor the volumes of water in the system, allowing them to determine even more improvements in the coming months. |

Virtual 3D Learning project makes debut at The Skills Show |
Building on our pilot Virtual Reality VET presentation at WorldSkills Leipzig 2013, WorldSkills Foundation and virtual reality technology provider EON Reality collaborated once again to present an ‘Experience Virtual 3D Learning’ showcase at The Skills Show in Birmingham, UK last month. Alongside hundreds of school children, students, apprentices and teachers who stopped by to experience the Virtual 3D Learning showcase, other high-profile personalities were spotted trying the applications out including WorldSkills President Simon Bartley and Skills Show patron Theo Paphitis. In this video – http://youtu.be/1vYHSoV6IQs – guests explain the impact of the project at this year's event, while a taste of some of the immersive applications can be seen here: http://youtu.be/hRe-rrcJgHg |
