Modelling Vocational Excellence (MoVE) was the inaugural research study of the WorldSkills Foundation. The research team is truly a global affair with researchers from RMIT University and Deakin University in Australia, University of Tampere in Finland and Oxford University – ESRC Centre on Skills, Knowledge and Organisational Performance (SKOPE) in the United Kingdom. The purpose of the research was to get answers to these questions: Do skills competitions really make a difference? Do competitions contribute to the stock of skills that economic and social development demand? During WorldSkills London 2011, 413 Experts and 165 Competitors completed the MoVE survey.

The overall conclusion from the survey results was that WorldSkills Competitions "raise quality, promote professional development and drive improvements in vocational training." Other shot narratives emerging from the survey's respondents identify the WorldSkills experience as one of Lifelong Learning, a Pathway to Professional Identity, Leaders in the Making, and Strengthening National Training Systems.
