By Sally Eley, WorldSkills London 2011 As WorldSkills London 2011 approaches, sign up for a once in a lifetime chance to be part of the UK’s biggest ever global skills event! With just over 4 months to go before London hosts the UK’s biggest ever showcase for vocational skills, opportunities for those living and working in and around London are mounting. Taking place at ExCel London from 5-8 October, WorldSkills London 2011 will see almost 1000 young people from across the globe compete for Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in skills as diverse as hairdressing and hospitality to floristry and graphic design. |

By WorldSkills London 2011 Judges at the 2011 RHS Chelsea Flower Show have awarded WorldSkills London 2011 a Silver-gilt medal for their ‘hands on’ educational exhibit “Showcasing Skills that Shape our World”, whilst WorldSkills competitors Joe Massie and Jessica Andrews scooped up the Young Florist of the Year Gold and Bronze respectively. |

By Michelle Turpin, WorldSkills International The Global Skills Marketplace (GSM) will offer internationally themed seminars relating to skills development and training, skills policy and practice, emerging technologies, the new global workforce and international best practices. These sessions will allow participants to learn and share best practices, ask questions and network with others. The Global Skills Marketplace will be held on Friday 7 October 2011. WorldSkills International and WorldSkills London 2011 invite all interested groups to complete the proposal form by 2 July 2011. A committee will review all proposals and will inform those chosen to present at the GSM by the middle-end of July 2011.GSM workshops will be 50 minute sessions, ideally 20-30 minutes of presenting followed by interactive discussions on the topic. Portuguese National Skills Competition |

By Departamento de Formação Profissional The Azores were the scene of the Portuguese National Skills Championship, held in Ponta Delgada on the island of St. Miguel from 2-6 May 2011. Approximately 500 people attended the event. 34 skilled professions were represented during the competition with around 180 young people between 18 and 25 years from all regions of the country. |

By Roberto Knowles, SENAI The Brazilian delegation which will compete at the 41st WorldSkills Competition in London, United Kingdom is beginning to take form. Starting Monday 23 May 2011, the national champions have been gathered in the Brazilian capital city of Brasilia for an important selection process. During this phase, all 28 Competitors will undergo simulated tests in order to reach the required technical marks in each of their respective skills. |

A Grand Celebration of a Historic Event |

By Karen Sum, ITE Singapore’s Prime Minister opens new ITE College West to great fanfare. It was a welcome befitting of a rock star. Three thousand students cheered and banged their clapper wildly when the man-of-the-moment arrived. He was none other than Prime Minister (PM) Lee Hsien Loong. On 18 April, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) College West Singapore was officially opened by PM Lee, who was the Guest-of-Honour for this historic event. Some 700 guests, including then Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean, then Minister for Education and Second Minister for Defence, Dr Ng Eng Hen, and then Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong, were invited to witness the event. |
