In memory of Dieter Niedermann |
||||
By Armin Mühlematter On March 4, 2010, many hundreds of people from the worlds of culture, politics and skills came together at St Gallen Cathedral to farewell Dieter Niedermann, Vice President Finances and Sponsorship of the WorldSkills St Gallen 2003 Organising Committee. In 2001, after the WorldSkills St Gallen 1997 Organising Committee had decided to host the WorldSkills Competition for a second time in 2003, Dieter joined the Board and agreed to be responsible for the finances and sponsorship. This was very fortunate for us, because Dieter, the former Permanent Secretary of the Canton of St Gallen, had a great deal of experience in these two important fields. His political connections were also very useful to the OC. Dieter very quickly took up work on preparations for the Competition. He knew many of the OC members and swiftly established contact with WorldSkills International (WSI) as well as Swiss Skills and the various skills organisations involved in preparations for the Competition. He was not only our 'Minister of Finance'', he was also our lawyer – and often our 'English Interpreter', since he had studied in the USA for a year. After only a short time working with the St Gallen Organising Committee, Dieter became very enthusiastic about the idea of WSI and devoted much of his time to the organisation of WSC 2003. During the St Gallen Competition, he had excellent relations with all Member delegations and was always ready to help. He was largely responsible for ensuring the healthy financial outcome. Transfer of knowledge was very important to Dieter. In the years following WorldSkills St Gallen 2003, he was in contact with the organisers of WorldSkills Helsinki, Shizuoka, Calgary, London and Leipzig, giving them all the financial information they needed. He also visited the last three Competitions with other members of the Board of St Gallen. He also visited the organisers of WorldSkills London 2011, most recently in November 2009. Members interested in bidding to host the WorldSkills Competition also turned to Dieter for support. He was an excellent adviser to all. Sadly, Dieter developed health problems after visiting WorldSkills Calgary. The doctors diagnosed a brain tumour. Unfortunately, surgery was not successful and Dieter passed away on February 22, 2010. The St Gallen Organising Committee and the whole WorldSkills International family have lost a wonderful friend and supporter. We will always remember his generous spirit, warmth, great sense of humour, and his enthusiasm for the WorldSkills movement. |
