Riding the Wind Best Option for International Competitors

Set to the majestic Rocky Mountains, the City of Calgary boasts a young, energetic metropolitan population where enthusiasm is brewing for WorldSkills Calgary 2009.

A simple but superior transit system is ready to handle international passengers for the 40th WorldSkills Competition this September, according to Theresa Keddy, a spokesperson for Calgary Transit. Keddy encourages the Competitors to “Ride the Wind,” a slogan that comes from the C-Train system being entirely wind-powered.

WSI President receives Honorary Doctorate

Tjerk (Jack) Dusseldorp received an Honorary Doctorate at the
RMIT University's Honorary Awards Ceremony in Melbourne,
Australia, May 7, 2009.

The WorldSkills International Board and Secretariat would like to congratulate Tjerk on this outstanding recognition!

Tjerk Dusseldorp is the President of WorldSkills International and
he is also the Executive Chairman of the Dusseldorp Skill
Forum (DSF).

600 people will attend this year’s WorldSkills Leaders Forum (WSLF), September 3, 2009, making it the largest WSLF to date!

The keynote address will be given by business executive, author, and consultant Don Tapscott. An internationally renowned authority on the impact of information technology on business, Don Tapscott is the author of Wikinomics How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything, and Growing Up Digital.

Canadian Team 2009 on the Portal

2009 will see the beginning of a new era for the WorldSkills Portal (WSP). Not only will more and more WorldSkills International Member countries/regions be joining the WSP for the first time, every Competitor will be represented on the Portal with their photo, name, skill and year of Competition.

The WSP has over the last couple of weeks been linked with our registration system, so that every time a Competitor is registered for WorldSkills Calgary 2009, an individual page is created on the Portal.

24 students from 9 regions will represent Spain at WSC2009

Eva Almunia closed the 32nd Edition of the Olimpiadas de la Formación Profesonal.

24 students will form the team which will represent Spain in the 40th WorldSkills Competition in Calgary, Canada in September 2009.

The Secretary of State for Education and Training, Eva Almunia presented the gold, silver and bronze medals to a total of 70 students who were competing in the 18 skills at Spainskills.

Portugese National Skill Competition 2009

The Institute of Employment and Vocational Training, promotes, organises and conducts the Regional and National Vocational Skills Competition, and undertakes to represent the Portuguese team in WorldSkills and in EuroSkills.

In addition to being a Competition where young people test the skills acquired in a training and/or work context, the National Vocational Skills Competition (SkillsPortugal) is designed to be a stage where companies, vocational training/education institutions and young visitors (many of whom have reached the age at which they must decide on their life projects) come into contact with the personal investment and the skills shown by the young professional Competitors. The Competition is thus transformed into a highly skilled showcase of young talents.

Taitaja 2009 - Finnish National Skills Competition

Finnish National Skills Competition, Taitaja, was held in Vaasa March 25 – 27, 2009. It was the twentieth anniversary of Taitaja. The Competition was a real success. Some 350 youngsters competed in 37 different trades under the eyes of over 46,000 visitors. There were also three Abilympic trades for the students with special needs and the Taitaja9 Competition for the ninth graders. The atmosphere during the Competition was positive and well organised technical arrangements made it easy to enjoy competing and to follow the Competition.
